Shoot for the Moon, You Might Hit the Stars

There is a saying, “shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you’ll end up among the stars.” This is a great example of how thinking big can get you a long way to reaching your overall life goals. If you have a dream, don’t be fooled into believing it cannot come true. One of the best things about the human condition is that we are all capable of great and wonderful things. We all have great desires, but we are made to believe that these dreams are foolish. The truth is that you cannot go wrong with big thinking. Set the bar for your life as high as you can and you might just be surprised at how close you come to reaching greatness.

Am I really thinking BIG?

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make about big thinking is that they aren’t thinking big enough. If you “big” goals include having a good day today, you aren’t thinking big at all. All good big thinking has similar characteristics:

- Big Thinking is Positive: You may think that a diabolical plan by an insane person is “big thinking”, but the reality is a lot different. One aspect that all big thinkers have in common is that there ideas benefit everyone. If you want to be a big thinker, look for ways to improve the life experience of all you meet.

- Big Thinking means Big Plans: All great big thinkers’ attained greatness, not by their thoughts alone, but by how they expressed them. If you’ve got a great idea for making your life and the lives of those around you better, don’t stop. An idea is only a reality when realized. All those who want to think big should be ready to plan big as well. This means planning on a large scale as well as over the long term.

- Big Thinkers are Motivated: When you think big you are forced to move more quickly towards your goal. This extra motivation separates those who think big and those who think more for the here and the now.

Big Expectations Breed Better Results

It’s a fact that you are never going to reach greatness in your life if you don’t want to. You don’t think Olympians and professional athletes got to where they have by not having big expectations, do you? In order to meet the goals you have now, ensure that you have larger goals for the future. Your life is in your hands. Have big expectations for your future and it will breed greater results in the present.

Building an Attitude of Big Thinking

Having one big thought is not enough to sustain your life around. You need an attitude of big thinking if you want to prosper throughout life. Continue to set high expectations for yourself and you will build a house of great things in life. It is my goal that those who read are encouraged and uplifted by these messages, were you? $44,727 – that’s how much attendee Avril Carpenter took home as the winner of our “Internet Challenge” at the recent World Internet Summit – New Zealand.

After sitting through 4 fun days of learning, the last thing Avril expected was to win, “I just can’t believe it… wait till I tell my husband!” said Avril.

The 400-strong audience cheered and congratulated Avril. And the internet challenge expert responsible for making it happen, Steven Essa, said he couldn’t be happier that she’d won it.

I read an article yesterday and thought it would be worth to share it here with everyone.

Thanks for the information you have sent me so far. My biggest challenge is how to start my business while I am working. That is, it is very difficult for me to be at my work place and at the same time run my own business.

I am afraid of quiting work, because I have my doubts in business.

Dear Wezi,

It’s the dream of almost every employee I know to quit their jobs and start their own business but most people never take the plunge. Here are some tips to help you get going:

1) Use Your Job for Market Research

Hopefully your current job has something to do with the business that you want to start. This way you can learn about the industry, meet potential customers, and improve your skills while still getting your regular paycheck.

If your job has nothing to do with the industry you want to jump into then you might consider switching jobs so you can get more industry experience. If your longer term goal is to have you own business then you want to give yourself your best chance of success and learn as much as you can about the business you want to start before you actually go out and do it.

2) Negotiate Your Hours

When you’re ready to commit more time to your own business try to negotiate more flexible hours with your boss to free up some time. See if you can work a couple of half days, for example, or only come in Mondays to Thursdays. This way you can still earn some money from your job while you build up your business.

Note: make sure you’re adding a lot of value to your boss before you go in and ask for flexible hours. If you’re just an average worker it’ll be easy to say no. If you’re a superstar and they might risk losing you then it’s far more likely that you’ll get a yes.

3) Get a Customer

It’s a lot easier to quit your job when you have a customer paying your bills. A lot of entrepreneurs leave their jobs to start a business and then have to go back and get another job six months later when their funds have run out.

Find someone who is willing to pay you for what you do and work on their projects in your extra time. If you have a day off because you’ve negotiated time off then use it. Otherwise look at your after hours time to deliver on your projects. When you have someone who is willing to write you a check then you’re on the right path to starting a successful business.

4) Start With a Service

Product based businesses are expensive to get going and expensive to fix if something wasn’t quite designed well (which always happens with new products). Try starting a service based business first which you can get going with zero startup capital (just your time) and make it fit into your schedule.

As you build up a client base you can get to know their pain points and potentially release a product to help them. It has a much higher chance of succeeding because you’re building it around paying clients and you have your service based business to support you while the product side of your business grows.
